Spinel Is Not Ruby (But It Fooled Kings)
For most of recorded history, red spinel and ruby were the same stone, at least as far as anyone knew. They share color, luster, and origin deposits. The confusion wasn't ignorance. It was the limits of pre-modern mineralogy.
Chemical composition: MgAl₂O₄, the cubic crystal system
Spinel is magnesium aluminum oxide: MgAl₂O₄. It crystallizes in the cubic system, forming characteristic octahedral crystals. Ruby is corundum (Al₂O₃), also forming in metamorphic environments, which is why the two appear together in the same alluvial gravels of Burma and Sri Lanka.
The cubic crystal system gives spinel a key optical property: it is singly refractive. Ruby is doubly refractive. Under a refractometer, spinel gives one RI reading (typically 1.712–1.736). Ruby gives two. That single test separates them definitively.
Hardness: Mohs 8, exceptional durability
Spinel's hardness sits at 8 on the Mohs scale. That places it above most colored stones, only ruby, sapphire, and alexandrite are harder among natural gems commonly traded. For collectors, hardness matters: it means spinel is wearable, not just displayable. No special care protocols. No fragility concerns.
The Black Prince's Ruby and the Timur Ruby: famous misidentifications
The most famous spinel in the world is set in the Imperial State Crown of the United Kingdom. It's called the Black Prince's Ruby. It is not a ruby. It's a 170-carat red spinel, and it wasn't correctly identified until the science existed to distinguish the two species.
The Timur Ruby, another stone in the British Crown Jewels, followed the same path. Believed to be a ruby for centuries, it was reclassified as spinel in 1851. French mineralogist Jean-Baptiste Louis Romé de l'Isle had formally separated spinel from ruby as a distinct mineral in 1783, but the reclassification of famous stones took decades longer.

It doesn't match the saturated cornflower blue of fine Kashmir sapphire, but for collectors who want a natural, untreated blue stone, it's a serious alternative, at a fraction of the price.
Pink, orange, violet, black, and color-change spinel
Violet spinel is increasingly sought by collectors who want something outside the standard red-blue axis. It ranges from lavender to deep purple, often with strong saturation. Orange spinel, sometimes called “flame spinel,” is rarer still. Black spinel is opaque, cut en cabochon, and used primarily in jewelry design.
Color-change spinel exists but is extremely rare. Stones that shift from blue-grey in daylight to purple under incandescent light command significant premiums when the change is strong and clean.
Cobalt blue spinel: the rarest and most valuable variety
Cobalt blue spinel is in a category of its own. The color comes from cobalt, not iron, producing a vivid, neon-intensity blue that no other natural gem replicates at the same price point. Most cobalt blue spinel comes from Tanzania (Mahenge and Ipanko) and Sri Lanka.
Fine cobalt blue spinel trades at $3,000–$8,000/ct for collector-grade material. Exceptional stones, eye-clean, strongly saturated, over 2 carats, reach $10,000–$20,000+/ct. Top-tier examples have sold above $35,000/ct at auction. The supply is tiny. The demand from serious collectors is not.
Where Spinel Comes From
Spinel forms in metamorphic and igneous environments, typically in marble and skarn deposits. It concentrates in alluvial gravels after weathering, the same gravels that produce ruby and sapphire in Southeast Asia and South Asia.
Burma (Mogok): the historic source
Mogok, Myanmar remains the benchmark origin for red and pink spinel. The valley has produced gem-quality spinel for over a thousand years. Mogok material is known for its vivid chromium-driven red, strong fluorescence, and exceptional transparency. The “Jedi” designation, used informally in the trade for the most intensely saturated hot-pink and red Mogok spinels, commands the highest premiums.
Fine Mogok red spinel trades at $5,000–$12,000/ct. Exceptional “Jedi” stones reach $15,000–$25,000+/ct. Origin documentation from GIA or Gübelin confirming Burmese provenance adds a measurable premium.
Sri Lanka, Tajikistan (Kuh-i-Lal), Tanzania, Vietnam
Sri Lanka produces blue, pink, and violet spinel from the same gem gravels that yield sapphire. Quality is generally high; prices are lower than Burmese material.
Tajikistan's Kuh-i-Lal deposit is one of the oldest known spinel sources, referenced in medieval trade routes. It produces red and pink spinel, though output is limited and inconsistent.
Tanzania is now the primary source for cobalt blue spinel, with the Mahenge and Ipanko areas producing the most sought-after material. Mahenge also produces vivid pink-red spinel with exceptional saturation.
Vietnam (Luc Yen) produces red, pink, and blue spinel. Quality can rival Mogok material, though origin premiums are lower.
Origin matters in spinel more than in most colored stones. A certified Burmese red spinel will trade at 20–50% above equivalent material from other sources, depending on size and quality. Cobalt blue from Tanzania commands its own premium over iron-blue from Sri Lanka. Always ask for a lab report that includes origin determination, not just species identification.
Why Spinel Is Undervalued, and For How Long
The collector case for spinel rests on three structural facts. None of them are speculative.
The treatment advantage: spinel is almost never heated
Heat treatment is the norm in ruby and sapphire. Over 95% of commercial ruby is heated to improve color and clarity. The same applies to most sapphire. Untreated stones command significant premiums, sometimes 30–100% above treated equivalents.
Spinel is different. The overwhelming majority of natural spinel reaches the market with no treatment at all. The color is natural. The clarity is natural. There's no “untreated premium” to pay because untreated is the default. For a collector building a portfolio of natural, unmodified stones, spinel is structurally advantaged.
Supply constraints: no major new deposits
No significant new spinel deposits have come online in recent years. Mogok output is constrained by political instability in Myanmar. Kuh-i-Lal is limited. Mahenge production is small-scale. The supply side is not growing. Demand is.
Growing collector and auction demand
Spinel appeared on the radar of major auction houses in the 2010s and has stayed there. The 2015 Hope Spinel, a 50.13-carat historic stone, sold at Bonhams for $1.46 million ($29,000+/ct), setting the first major benchmark. Since then, auction results have climbed steadily. The collector base is expanding, particularly in Asia, where spinel's historical significance in Mughal and Chinese imperial jewelry resonates strongly.
Treatments: Almost None (And Why That Matters)
Unheated as standard: what this means for collectors
When you buy a ruby, you assume it's heated unless proven otherwise. When you buy spinel, you assume it's unheated unless proven otherwise. That inversion matters. It means the baseline product, the stone you're buying without a premium, is already in its natural state. No color enhancement. No clarity improvement. What you see is what the earth produced.
For collectors who prioritize natural, unmodified stones, this is a significant structural advantage over ruby and sapphire.
The rare exceptions: fracture filling and coating
Fracture filling exists in spinel, though it's uncommon. It's used to reduce the visibility of surface-reaching fractures, the same technique applied to emerald, but far rarer in spinel. Coating (applying a thin surface layer to alter color or luster) has also been documented, though it's detectable under magnification.
Neither treatment is standard. Both are detectable by competent labs. If you're buying a significant stone, a lab report is not optional.

How to Identify a Spinel
Visual tests: singly refractive, octahedral crystals, color
Start with the refractometer. Spinel reads a single RI value around 1.718. Ruby reads two values (approximately 1.762 and 1.770). That single reading is the fastest separation tool available.
Under magnification, look for octahedral crystal inclusions, small negative crystals in the shape of octahedra, which are characteristic of spinel. The absence of silk (rutile needles) also points away from ruby.
Color alone is not diagnostic. Red spinel and ruby overlap significantly. Blue spinel and blue sapphire overlap. Use instruments.

Spinel vs. garnet: how to tell them apart
Both spinel and garnet are singly refractive and occur in similar colors. The key separation: garnet has a lower RI (typically 1.72–1.89 depending on variety, but most common garnets read below spinel's range) and no fluorescence under UV. Red spinel typically shows strong red fluorescence under longwave UV. Most red garnets do not.
Crystal habit also differs: garnet forms dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystals; spinel forms octahedra.
Lab certification: what a report tells you
A GIA Colored Stone Identification Report for spinel will state:
