
What Is Emerald?
Color, origins, and what the market hides.
Emerald is the green to bluish-green variety of the mineral beryl. That single sentence is where most guides stop. It's also where the interesting part begins.
The emerald market is opaque by design. Treatments are widespread, origin premiums are real but rarely quantified, and the difference between a $200 stone and a $200,000 one comes down to variables most sellers don't volunteer. This guide covers all of it.

Emerald Is Beryl (And So Is Aquamarine)
Emerald belongs to the beryl mineral group, the same species that produces aquamarine (blue), morganite (pink), heliodor (yellow), and goshenite (colorless). What makes emerald an emerald is not its species but its color, and what produces that color is a trace element.
Chemical composition: Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ + chromium or vanadium
The emerald chemical formula is Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈, beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate. Pure beryl is colorless. Add trace amounts of chromium (Cr³⁺) or vanadium (V³⁺) during crystal growth and you get the green that defines emerald.

The emerald luster is vitreous, the same clean, glassy appearance as other beryls. Under good lighting, a well-cut stone shows strong brilliance with a characteristic warm green glow.
Are emeralds crystals? Yes. Emeralds form as hexagonal prismatic crystals in metamorphic and hydrothermal environments. The crystal habit is one of the most recognizable in mineralogy, long six-sided prisms, often with visible growth striations.
Hardness: Mohs 7.5–8, and why inclusions are the real issue
At 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, emerald is harder than most materials it will encounter in daily wear. But hardness is not the whole story. Emerald density sits around 2.72 g/cm³, relatively light for a colored stone, which is useful for identification.
The real durability issue is not hardness. It's the fractures. Emeralds form in geologically complex environments, and their crystal growth is almost always interrupted by fluid inclusions, mineral crystals, and healed fractures. These internal features reduce toughness, the resistance to breaking, far more than the Mohs number suggests.
A heavily included emerald with fractures reaching the surface is fragile. That's why the jardin matters not just aesthetically but structurally.
The Color Question: What Makes an Emerald an Emerald
Color is the primary value driver in emerald. It's also the most contested variable in the trade.
Green from chromium vs. vanadium: does it matter?
Traditionally, only chromium-colored beryl qualified as emerald. Vanadium-colored green beryl was classified separately in some systems, particularly in the United States, where the GIA once drew a distinction.
Today, the trade consensus is clear: both chromium and vanadium coloration qualify as emerald. GIA, Gübelin, and SSEF all use the emerald designation for vanadium-colored stones meeting color saturation thresholds. The chromium vs. vanadium debate is largely settled, but it's worth knowing when reading older literature or dealing with certain dealers who use the distinction to justify pricing.
In practice, chromium-colored stones from Colombia tend to show a warmer, more intense green with a slight red fluorescence under UV. Vanadium stones (common in Brazil) can appear slightly more yellowish-green. The market still favors the chromium look, but the coloring agent alone is not a reliable proxy for quality.
Saturation, tone, hue, the three variables that set price
Color in emerald is evaluated across three axes:
Hue — the dominant color should be green, with secondary hues of blue or yellow acceptable. Pure green to slightly bluish-green commands the highest prices.
Tone — medium to medium-dark. Too light and the stone reads as green beryl, not emerald. Too dark and it loses transparency and life.
Saturation — strong to vivid. This is the single most important variable. A vivid, highly saturated green at medium tone is the benchmark. Dull or grayish stones drop sharply in value.
The GIA color grading system for colored stones uses these three axes. For emerald, the target zone is roughly: hue = G (green) to bG (bluish-green), tone = 65–75, saturation = strong to vivid.
Are all emeralds green? (and what “too blue” means for value)
By definition, yes, but the range is wider than most buyers expect. Emerald spans from yellowish-green to bluish-green. The market tolerates secondary blue hues up to a point. Beyond that threshold, typically when blue becomes the dominant secondary hue, the stone is reclassified as aquamarine or blue-green beryl, and value drops accordingly.
“Too blue” is a real market penalty. A stone sitting at the boundary between emerald and aquamarine will be discounted by dealers who can't confidently call it one or the other. Lab reports resolve this: GIA and other labs will specify whether a stone qualifies as emerald or is better described as green beryl or aquamarine.
Green beryl vs. emerald is a real distinction. Green beryl is the same species but lacks sufficient saturation or the right coloring agent to qualify as emerald. It trades at a fraction of the price. Always verify the lab report species designation.
Where Emeralds Come From
Emerald origin is one of the most commercially significant variables in the colored stone market. Unlike diamonds, where origin is rarely priced, emerald origin is actively traded.
Colombia: Muzo, Chivor, Coscuez, the benchmark
Colombia produces the world's most commercially important emeralds. The three main mining districts, Muzo, Chivor, and Coscuez, each produce stones with distinct characteristics.
Muzo — the most prestigious. Stones tend toward a warm, slightly yellowish-green with strong saturation. Three-phase inclusions (fluid + gas + solid crystal) are a classic Muzo fingerprint.
Chivor — slightly cooler, more bluish-green. Often shows two-phase inclusions. Historically associated with some of the finest stones ever mined.
Coscuez — more variable quality. Produces both commercial and fine material.
Colombian emeralds are associated with the classic “Colombian green,” a vivid, warm, slightly warm-toned green that the market has priced as the benchmark for decades.
Zambia: the challenger origin
Zambia, specifically the Kagem mine, the world's largest single emerald mine by volume, has repositioned itself as a serious alternative to Colombia over the past 15 years.
Zambian emeralds tend toward a cooler, slightly bluish-green with strong saturation and often better clarity than Colombian material. The iron content in Zambian stones gives them a slightly darker, more blue-green appearance that some collectors prefer.
Gemfields, which operates Kagem, runs regular rough auctions. In their November 2024 higher-quality auction, average prices reached $167.51 per carat for fine rough. Commercial-quality Zambian rough sold for as little as $4.47 per carat in the same period, illustrating the enormous quality spread within a single origin.
Brazil, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Ethiopia
Brazil — large producer, primarily vanadium-colored stones. Commercial to fine quality. Often sold at a discount to Colombian material.
Zimbabwe — the Sandawana mine produces small but intensely colored stones. Chromium-rich, vivid green, typically under 1 carat.
Afghanistan — Panjshir Valley stones. Variable quality, often with strong color but significant inclusions. Artisanal mining conditions make consistent supply difficult.
Ethiopia — an emerging source. Ethiopian emeralds can show strong color but are less established in the auction market.
The Colombia premium is real and quantifiable. At the fine-quality level, Colombian origin adds approximately 30–50% over comparable Zambian or Brazilian material. At the top end, vivid color, minimal treatment, strong transparency, 5+ carats, the gap widens dramatically.

The origin premium requires lab confirmation. A dealer's claim of Colombian origin is not sufficient. Gübelin, SSEF, and GIA all offer origin determination services. The cost of that report is trivial relative to the premium it validates, or invalidates.
The Jardin: Why Inclusions Are Different for Emeralds
No other major gemstone has a dedicated term for its inclusions. Emerald does.
What is a jardin?
Jardin, French for “garden,” refers to the characteristic network of internal inclusions found in natural emeralds. It includes:
Fluid inclusions (often three-phase: liquid + gas + solid mineral crystal)
Healed fractures and fissures
Mineral crystal inclusions (pyrite, calcite, biotite, actinolite)
Growth tubes and needles
The jardin is not a defect in the same sense as an inclusion in a diamond. It is expected. It is characteristic. And in some cases, it is diagnostic, specific inclusion types are associated with specific origins and can help confirm provenance.
A jardin that is dense, reaches the surface, or creates structural weakness is a problem. A jardin that is internal, moderate, and doesn't compromise transparency is simply the stone's biography.
Eye-clean emeralds: how rare, what they cost
Eye-clean emeralds, stones with no inclusions visible to the naked eye at arm's length, are genuinely rare. The vast majority of natural emeralds show visible inclusions. This is accepted by the trade and priced accordingly.
An eye-clean Colombian emerald of fine color in the 2–3 carat range is a significant find. Expect prices at the upper end of the fine-quality range or beyond. Stones marketed as “eye-clean” without lab confirmation should be viewed skeptically, the term is subjective and frequently abused.
Clarity vs. color: which matters more?
Color wins. A vivid, strongly saturated emerald with moderate inclusions will outprice a pale, eye-clean stone every time. The trade accepts inclusions in emerald in a way it does not for ruby or sapphire.
That said, inclusions that reach the surface, compromise structural integrity, or obscure the color are genuine value detractors. The ideal is strong color with a moderate, internal jardin that doesn't interrupt the stone's face-up appearance.
The Treatment Problem: Cedar Oil, Resin, and What Dealers Don't Say
This is where most buyers get burned. Roughly 90–99% of emeralds on the market are treated. The treatment is almost never disclosed proactively at the point of sale.
Oiling: the universal standard (and its degrees)
Cedar oil, and more recently, synthetic oils with a refractive index close to emerald's, is applied to emeralds to fill surface-reaching fractures and improve apparent clarity. The oil is colorless and simply makes fractures less visible by reducing the refractive index contrast between the stone and the fissure.
Oiling is accepted by the trade as a standard practice. It is analogous to heat treatment in sapphire, widespread, expected, and not inherently problematic. The degree of oiling is what matters.
A stone with minor oiling (F1 on the GIA scale) that would still look good without treatment is very different from a stone that depends on heavy oiling to appear presentable.
Resin filling (Opticon, Gematrat): the red flags
Resin filling is a different category. Products like Opticon (an epoxy resin) and Gematrat fill fractures more permanently and more aggressively than oil. Resins can be colored, can harden inside the stone, and are significantly harder to remove.
The problems with resin-treated stones:
Resins can yellow or crack over time, permanently altering appearance.
Colored resins can artificially enhance color, a form of misrepresentation.
Resin treatment is harder to detect without lab equipment.
Resins are not reversible; re-oiling is not possible once resin is present.
A stone with significant resin filling should trade at a meaningful discount to an equivalently oiled stone. Many don't, because the buyer doesn't know.
F1/F2/F3 scale: how to read a lab report on emerald treatments
GIA uses a three-level scale for emerald clarity enhancement:
F1 — Minor. The treatment has only a slight effect on appearance. The stone would look essentially the same without it.
F2 — Moderate. The treatment has a noticeable effect. The stone's apparent clarity is meaningfully improved by the treatment.
F3 — Significant. The treatment has an obvious, major effect. The stone's face-up appearance depends substantially on the treatment.
F1 is acceptable. F2 requires a price adjustment. F3 is a red flag for any serious collector.
Gübelin and SSEF use slightly different terminology but report the same information. Read the comments section of any lab report carefully, the degree of enhancement and the type of filler (oil vs. resin) will be specified.
“No indications of clarity enhancement” on a lab report is the gold standard. It is rare and commands a significant premium, often 50–100% above an equivalently colored F1 stone.
How to ask the right questions before buying
Before purchasing any emerald:
Ask for the lab report. GIA, Gübelin, or SSEF. Not a dealer's in-house certificate.
Check the treatment disclosure. What type? What degree?
Ask specifically about resin. “Is this oil or resin?” is a direct question that should get a direct answer.
Request the origin determination. Especially for Colombian claims.
Ask about re-oiling history. Oiled stones may need periodic re-treatment. Know what you're buying.
How to Identify an Emerald
Visual tests: color, luster, inclusions
In the field, without instruments:
Color — vivid green to bluish-green. Uniform saturation. No gray or brown modifiers in fine stones.
Luster — vitreous. A glassy, bright surface reflection. Dull or waxy luster suggests a simulant or heavily treated stone.
Inclusions — natural emeralds almost always show inclusions. An inclusion-free stone warrants scrutiny, it may be synthetic or a simulant (green glass, synthetic spinel, demantoid garnet, tsavorite garnet).
Heft — emerald density (specific gravity ~2.72) means it feels lighter than a ruby or sapphire of the same size.
Common emerald simulants and how they differ:
Green glass — no inclusions, higher luster, lower hardness.
Synthetic emerald (Chatham, Gilson) — inclusion-free or with characteristic synthetic inclusions; lab-grown, not natural.
Tsavorite garnet — singly refractive, higher dispersion, no birefringence.
Chrome tourmaline — different RI, different inclusion types.
Demantoid garnet — higher dispersion (“fire”), horsetail inclusions.
Lab certification: GIA, Gübelin, SSEF, what each tells you
GIA — provides species identification, color description, treatment disclosure (F1/F2/F3 scale), and optional origin determination. The most widely recognized lab globally. Strong for treatment disclosure.
Gübelin Gem Lab (Switzerland) — the benchmark for origin determination. Gübelin's provenance reports are considered the most authoritative in the trade for Colombian, Zambian, and other origins. Also reports treatment type and degree.
SSEF (Swiss Gemmological Institute) — strong on origin determination and treatment analysis. Particularly respected for Colombian emerald provenance. Often used alongside Gübelin for high-value stones.
For any emerald above $5,000 total value, a report from at least one of these three labs is not optional. For stones above $20,000, dual certification (Gübelin + SSEF, or GIA + Gübelin) is standard practice among serious collectors.

In 2024, Christie's sold the Aga Khan Emerald for $8.86 million, setting a new world auction record for total price for an emerald sold at auction. The stone's provenance, both geological and historical, drove the result.
What separates a record stone from a fine stone:
Colombian origin, confirmed by Gübelin and/or SSEF.
Vivid, pure green color with no gray or brown modifier.
No or minor oil (F1 or “no indications of clarity enhancement”).
Strong transparency, the stone transmits light rather than absorbing it.
5+ carats (size multiplies rarity exponentially).
Historical provenance or notable ownership history (adds 10–30% at major houses).

Is emerald a mineral or a gemstone? Both, technically. Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈). When cut and polished for jewelry or collecting, it is also a gemstone. The mineral classification is beryl; the gem variety is emerald.
