Public Paraíba tourmaline results run from about $2,700 per carat for a 181.61-carat Mozambique stone to just over $310,000 per carat for a 13.54-carat stone in a Tiffany necklace. Those two lots are very different objects, and the higher figure also includes the diamonds, the mount and the maker.

We found no reliable public price list for Paraíba tourmaline. This page keeps to auction results and a published estimate, each with its source.

TL;DR

  • The highest public result we found is $4.2 million for a Tiffany necklace at Christie's New York in December 2025.

  • Dividing a necklace price by its center stone overstates what the stone alone made.

  • Size does not protect the price per carat. The largest stone here has the lowest figure.

  • Origin and report wording matter, so compare only stones with comparable reports.

What Is the Record for Paraíba Tourmaline?

Christie's described the $4.2 million Tiffany necklace as a world record price for a Paraíba tourmaline at auction. The sale took place in New York on December 10, 2025, against a high estimate of $600,000, according to National Jeweler. National Jeweler also reported the per-carat price as an auction record.

Read that figure with care. The necklace also carries diamonds, bears a famous signature and came from the Draime collection, so the sale cannot tell us what the stone alone would fetch.

Why Is Paraíba Tourmaline So Expensive?

GIA describes Paraíba as a Brazilian source famous for vivid blue to green tourmalines colored by copper. IDEX dates the discovery to 1989 and estimates total recoveries in the tens of thousands of carats. Scarcity and that color are the usual explanation for the price, although no public data isolates either one.

Does Origin Change the Price?

Known deposits were long limited to Brazil, Nigeria and Mozambique. IDEX reports that GIA and Gübelin have also confirmed material from Ethiopia. We found no reliable public series comparing prices by origin, so we do not publish a multiple.

How to Read a Paraíba Quote

  • Ask for the report first. It should address the species, the presence of copper and any treatment.

  • Separate the stone from the jewel. A price for a signed piece also pays for the maker, the other stones and the mount.

  • Do not treat an estimate as a price. Estimates are set before a sale. The Tiffany necklace sold far above its estimate.

  • Compare like with like. Use the same size band, color and report wording.
